In the 1871 Sarah Campkin was living at the Attimore Hall as the Head of the Household. Her sister, Jane Ausell (nče Campkin) and her nephew, James Ausell were living with her at the time of the 1971 Census. Sarah's mother, Jane Campkin (nče Pennyfather) probably also lived at the Attimore before but died a year earlier in 1870. The proof of this comes from a newspaper cutting and old pocket book kindly loaned by Ellie Titmuss who can trace her family tree to the Campkins. This shows that Jane Campkin died after walking to see Lord and Lady Cowper.
Jane Campkin owned a pocket book which was inscribed with her name. There are entries in this book for her children which include Sarah Campkin.
The back page of Jane Campkin's pocket book. Notice the scratched entry for a Jane Campkin dated 15th December 1838. Probably an infant mortality made all the more poignant because in the next page back (below) is the entry for another Jane Campkin dated 1st September 1847.
. This memorial card shows that Sarah Campkin was still living at the Attimore
Hall farm at the time of her death on Boxing day 1880.
Ellie Titmuss: Notice of the Attimore Hall web site was printed in the November 2000 issue of the Hertfordshire Countryside magazine. Ellie's sister, Chris Almshoe e-mailed the Atti' web site with a request to get in touch. Ellie has researched her family tree and remembered that one of the ancestors lived at the Attimore. The link is this: Ellie's husband John's, Great Grandmother (Maryann Titmuss, nče Campkin) was the sister of Sarah Campkin (who lived at the Attimore). Got it?
The family tree for Jane and Thomas Campkin is as follows: Jane Pennyfather (1807-1870) married 1831 Thomas Campkin (1797-1870) their children: Sarah Thomas Jane John Maryann Jane 18-4-1834 1-3-1837 15-12-1838 9-10-1841 6-7-1845 1-9-1847 26-12-1880 died Attimore Hall
