There are many maps of the area around the Attimore Hall farm going back to 1766 (found so far) and some are reproduced here in part. Layout of the original Attimore Farm This map is a section of an OS map drawn 1898. The outline of the Attimore Hall can be seen clearly with the barns to the south. The road running south from map ref 285 and past the Atti' is the old Black Fan road, part of which still runs from the Vets and to the Shamrock. The new road named Ridgeway is to the left of the old lane. Black Fan road can be seen running from top left, past Hern's Cottage and ending at the map ref. 285. The new Black Fan road continues from this point and passes to the north of the Attimore Vets.
The original Farms around the Attimore The next map shows the layout and names of the fields of the three main farms in the Attimore area as they were in 1809. The outline of the fields were taken from a hand drawn map commissioned by the 5th Earl of Cowper. This extract by kind permission of Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies Ref. D/EP P33. The map image has been extensively modified for clarity, not least in that it has been turned upside down and all the text reversed because the map was drawn with south at the top! The names of the fields were taken from listings in a leather bound book hand drawn by Thomas Pallett in 1808 which resides in the archives of the Hertford County Hall (their ref. D/EP P31). The original map (ref.D/EP P33) is well worth viewing at the Hertfordshire Archives, as its shows all of the Tewin area in great detail, just as it was nearly 200 years ago. If you look at the names of the fields you will see that many of the estates of the New Town of Welwyn Garden City are named after them. To view the Map click on the thumbnail. Oldest Map found (so far) 1766 The next map is the oldest found so far of the area. It was made by Dury and Andrew in 1766. Attimore Hall is named as Grubs Barn which appears on later maps as the two cottages on Herns Lane. They in turn are marked here as Grubs Bushes! There was some confusion as to which parish the Attimore was originally in but this map places it firmly in Tewin. This allowed the correct Census returns to be examined which produced a list of previous tenants. Local current place names can be identified on this map. I.E. Tewin Water, Black Fan and Digswell Lodge, Etc. To view the Map click on the thumbnail. Size 88K Use the Back Button to return
