John S Crawford lived as a tenant and farmed at the Attimore from 1939 to 1957. He and his wife Olive Crawford were reported as living at the Attimore by the electoral Register in 1951. He was Jimmy Crawford's nephew and Eric Sherriff's cousin who was the last person to farm the Attimore. Some of John Crawford's employees were: Robin Streather (Manager) started in June 1946 as an apprentice and left 2 years 3 months later around September 1948. David Wakely (Apprentice) started around September 1948. He was a doctors son from Digswell. Stan Green (Manager, Cow man and good all round farm hand) started 1946. He and his family lived at Herns Cottage which was tied to the Attimore. Reg. Smith was at the farm in 1946. Was able to turn a shilling from almost anything. Did well for himself and moved to Wilkins Green Farm in Hatfield. Arthur Parker (Tractor driver) Terry Goodson (Laborer) Started straight from school. Lived in Digswell. Left after about 2 years to join the RAF. Was thin and 6' 4" tall. Terry Trevis (Laborer) Lived in Welwyn Garden City. There were two German Prisoners of War that worked on the farm during the week but they had to return to the prison at weekends! Carrie (Land girl) lived in the attic. Left and went to New Zealand. There was a factory just south of the Attimore near the railway crossing that made 'chaff' from hay and straw that was sold to feed work horses in London. It was owned, as were many properties in the area, by John Wallace. It burnt down in 1946. The information about the above from Robin Streather and Babara Brucciania. In 1950 the rent for the Attimore was £376 8s 0d per year.
The reason that John Crawford left the Attimore in 1957 was because it, and all the land was compulsory purchased by the Welwyn Garden City Corporation for the development of the new town. The next and last farmer at the Attimore was Eric Sherriff.
